Born 8 February 1981 in Kalmar, Sweden, Ida Nilsson built her early career on the track, winning 10 Swedish national titles between 2003 and 2006 and earning two NCAA titles at Northern Arizona University. She transitioned to trail and mountain running in her early 30s.
Her trail career produced three consecutive wins at the Transvulcania Ultramarathon from 2016 to 2018, making her the only three-time women's champion of that race. She also won the Marathon du Mont-Blanc, Zegama-Aizkorri, and set the Grand Canyon Rim-to-Rim-to-Rim women's FKT of 7:29:16 in November 2018. In 2023, she won the Canyons 100K by UTMB in 9:51:07.
Nilsson remains competitive into her mid-40s. In 2024, she set the masters course record at Western States 100 (16:56:52) and finished sixth overall. She trains in Mandalen, Norway and competes for Craft Sportswear.
