THE STORY

Luis Alberto Hernando Alzaga is a Spanish trail and skyrunning veteran born September 22, 1977 in Burgos. Before his switch to ultrarunning, he competed as a biathlete at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin. He pivoted to mountain running in the early 2010s and became one of the dominant forces of the discipline through the mid-decade.

Hernando won the Transvulcania Ultramarathon three consecutive years from 2014 through 2016. His 2015 winning time of 6:52:39 stood as the men's course record for more than a decade before being broken in 2026. He took the CCC at UTMB in 2019 in 10:37:49 and is a multi-time Trail World Championships medalist.

Hernando has raced for the adidas Terrex team for most of his trail career and has been instrumental in the brand's investment in the discipline. Now 48, he has reduced his competitive schedule but continues to race and coach within the Spanish trail community.
