Clare Gallagher grew up in suburban Denver, Colorado, and ran at Princeton University, graduating in 2014. She ran her first ultramarathon in Thailand in 2014 while teaching English after college, winning the inaugural Thailand Mountain Ultramarathon at 80 kilometers.
Gallagher entered the Leadville 100 in 2016 as a first-time 100-mile runner and won, posting the second-fastest women's time in the race's 33-year history at 19 hours and 27 seconds. She followed that with a win and course record at the CCC 101K in Chamonix in 2017 and won the Western States 100 in 2019, finishing with the second-fastest women's time in that race's history.
Outside of competition, Gallagher co-founded Protect Our Winters Trail, a climate advocacy organization, has testified before the Colorado state legislature on environmental legislation, and is a trail running ambassador for Patagonia.
