THE STORY

Workenesh Edesa is an Ethiopian marathon runner who set a personal best of 2:17:55 at Hamburg in April 2025 and won the Osaka Women's Marathon in consecutive editions in 2024 and 2025. Born on 11 September 1992, she trains in Addis Ababa under coach Gemedu Dedefo.

Edesa won the TCS Sydney Marathon in 2024 in 2:21:40, a result that was the fastest women's marathon performance on Australian soil at that time. She followed with the Osaka Women's Marathon course record of 2:18:51 in January 2024 and returned to retain the title in 2:21:00 in January 2025. She was also upgraded to third place at the Tokyo Marathon 2023 after runner-up Tsehay Gemechu was disqualified for doping.

Her Hamburg win of 2:17:55 in 2025 represents a significant improvement on her previous personal best and places her among the top-ranked women's marathon specialists in the current field.
