THE STORY

Mizuki Matsuda is a Japanese marathon runner born May 31, 1995, who competes for the Daihatsu Track and Field team under coach Miwako Yamanaka. She built her early reputation on the track as a two-time Japanese national champion at 10,000 meters in 2017 and 2018, with a personal best of 31:39 over the distance.

Matsuda made an immediate impact in the marathon, winning the 2018 Osaka International Women's Marathon in 2:22:44 in her debut at the distance. She returned to Osaka in January 2020 and won again in 2:21:47, vaulting herself into contention for a Tokyo 2020 Olympic team spot. After finishing second behind Mao Ichiyama at the 2021 Nagoya Women's Marathon selection race, Matsuda was named alternate to the Japanese Olympic marathon team rather than a starter.

She rebounded by winning the 2021 Nagoya Women's Marathon in 2:21:51 in difficult wind, then returned to Osaka in 2022 to win for a third time in 2:20:52, setting a new course record. In September 2024 she ran a personal best of 2:20:42 to finish sixth at the Berlin Marathon, her first major performance outside Japan and her fastest marathon to date.
