Sifan Hassan is a Dutch distance runner who has won Olympic titles at 5,000 meters, 10,000 meters and the marathon, a range no other woman has covered. She was born in Adama, Ethiopia, in 1993 and arrived in the Netherlands as a refugee at 15.
She won both the 5,000 and 10,000 meters at the 2019 World Championships in Doha, the first athlete to take that double at a global championship. She repeated it at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021 and added bronze in the 1,500 meters.
Hassan moved to the roads in 2023. She won the London Marathon on debut in 2:18:33 in April, then won Chicago in October in 2:13:44, at the time the second-fastest marathon a woman had run.
At the Paris Olympics in 2024 she took bronze in the 5,000 and 10,000 meters and then won the marathon in an Olympic record of 2:22:55. That made her the first woman, and the first athlete since Emil Zatopek in 1952, to medal at all three distances at a single Games.
She won the Sydney Marathon in 2025 in 2:18:22, setting the course record in the event's first year as an Abbott World Marathon Major.
