THE STORY

Harvey Lewis is an American ultrarunner from Cincinnati, Ohio, where he works as a high school teacher. Born April 13, 1976, in Wheeling, West Virginia, and raised in Berea, Ohio, he competes primarily in extreme-distance trail and road ultramarathons. He follows a vegan diet, which he credits for his endurance and recovery.

Lewis won the Badwater 135 through Death Valley twice, first in 2014 in 23:52:55 and again in 2021 in 25:50:23. He represented Team USA at the IAU 24 Hour World Championship in 2012, 2013, 2014, and 2017.

He is best known for backyard ultra racing, the last-runner-standing format in which competitors complete a 4.167-mile loop every hour until one runner remains. Lewis won Big Dog's Backyard Ultra in 2021 with 85 yards, covering 354.16 miles. In October 2023 he set the backyard ultra world record at the same event, completing 108 yards for 450 miles over roughly four and a half days.
