THE STORY

Geoffrey Mutai is a retired Kenyan marathon runner whose 2011 was one of the most dominant single seasons in the sport's history. He ran 2:03:02 to win the Boston Marathon in April 2011, the fastest marathon time recorded to that point, though it was not eligible for the world record because of Boston's net-downhill course. Six months later he won the New York City Marathon for the first time in 2:05:06.

Mutai returned to the front the following year, winning the 2012 Berlin Marathon in 2:04:15, his fastest record-eligible marathon. He won the New York City Marathon for a second time in 2013 in 2:08:24. Across a four-year stretch he posted four World Marathon Majors victories and routinely contested the podium at the largest marathons in the world.

Mutai is from the Eldama Ravine region of Kenya's Rift Valley. He retired from elite competition in the late 2010s. His 2011 Boston time stood as the fastest 26.2 miles ever run on any course for more than a decade.
