THE STORY

Wilson Loyanae Erupe is a Kenyan marathoner whose career is defined by four Seoul International Marathon titles and by the doping ban that split them. He won Seoul for the first time in 2012, then tested positive for the blood-boosting drug EPO in an out-of-competition test later that year, becoming the first Kenyan athlete sanctioned for the substance. He served a two-year ban.

Loyanae returned to Seoul and won again in 2015, then defended the title in 2016 with a personal best of 2:05:13. He collected a fourth Seoul title in 2018.

His four victories made him one of the most successful athletes in the history of the Seoul race, and one of the most scrutinized.
