Tamirat Tola is an Ethiopian marathoner and the 2024 Olympic champion, having won the Paris Games marathon in an Olympic record of 2:06:26. He entered that race as a late substitute for an injured teammate and left it with Ethiopia's first men's Olympic marathon title in 24 years.
Born on August 11, 1991 in Sebeta, Tola first reached a global podium with bronze in the 10,000 meters at the 2016 Rio Olympics. He took silver in the marathon at the 2017 World Championships, won the 2017 Dubai Marathon in 2:04:11, and set his personal best of 2:03:39 in winning the 2021 Amsterdam Marathon.
Tola won the marathon world title in Eugene in 2022, then took the 2023 New York City Marathon in a course record 2:04:58. His Paris gold in 2024 completed the set of global titles, and World Athletics named him its out-of-stadium athlete of the year for that season.
