THE STORY

Patrick Makau Musyoki, born March 2, 1985, in Manyanzaani Tala, Kenya, set the marathon world record at the 2011 Berlin Marathon with a time of 2:03:38, breaking the previous mark by 21 seconds. He held that record for two years before Wilson Kipsang lowered it at the 2013 Berlin Marathon.

Makau debuted at the marathon distance in Rotterdam in 2009, running 2:06:14. He won the 2010 Rotterdam Marathon in 2:04:48 and the 2010 Berlin Marathon in 2:05:08. His half marathon career was equally strong; he ran 58:52 in 2009 and won multiple major half marathon titles in Europe.

After injury curtailed his competitive prime in the mid-2010s, Makau retired from professional competition around 2018. He later moved into coaching, working with emerging athletes in Nairobi.
