The NN Marathon Rotterdam turns 45 on April 12, and the milestone edition carries extra weight. The race will double as the Dutch Marathon Championship, adding a national title to an already stacked international field. The flat, sea-level course through Europe's largest port city has produced three world records in its history and consistently delivers some of the fastest times on the spring calendar.

The Course Record

Bashir Abdi set the men's course record and European record of 2:03:36 in 2021. He has returned to Rotterdam every year since, winning again in 2025 with 2:03:47, just 11 seconds off his own mark. Timothy Kiplagat pushed him to the line that day, finishing in 2:03:50 in what became a two-man race over the final 10 kilometers. Abdi Nageeye, the Dutch Olympic marathon medalist, was third in 2:05:32.

The course has been a record-producing machine for over four decades. Carlos Lopes set the world record here in 1985. Belayneh Dinsamo broke it in 1988 with 2:06:50, a time that stood for 10 years. The flat profile, minimal turns, and sea-level elevation make it one of the fastest road marathon courses in the world.

The Women's Field

The women's course record of 2:18:58, set by Tiki Gelana of Ethiopia in 2012, has survived 14 editions. Uganda's Eunice Chumba won the 2025 women's race in 2:20:31, the closest anyone has come to Gelana's mark in recent years. Rotterdam's organizers have pushed to deepen the women's field, and the 2026 edition is expected to feature multiple sub-2:22 athletes.

The Dutch Championship Factor

The inclusion of the Dutch Marathon Championship adds a parallel storyline. The Netherlands has produced several world-class marathoners in recent years, led by Nageeye (2:04:56 PB) and Khalid Choukoud. For Dutch runners, the national title race creates a tactical dynamic within the broader international competition. Nageeye may run for the national title rather than chasing the overall podium, depending on how the international field shapes up.

What to Watch

Rotterdam's race weekend draws over 900,000 spectators to the streets, making it one of the best-attended sporting events in the Netherlands. The finish on the Coolsingel, the city's main boulevard, has become one of the most recognizable images in European distance running.

The NN Running Team, the race's title sponsor, typically places several of its athletes in the elite field. That partnership has helped Rotterdam maintain its status as a top-tier international marathon despite competition from London, Berlin, and the World Marathon Majors circuit.

For pace watchers, the course is honest. There are no hills to speak of, wind exposure along the Maas River is the primary variable, and the first half is typically run through sheltered city streets. Runners who go out on 2:03 pace in the first half are not being reckless. They are reading the course correctly.
