Sally McRae is an American ultrarunner from Southern California who has built one of the sport's most recognizable careers across distances from 100 to 240 miles. Born on 30 April 1980 in Orange County, California, she is known throughout the sport as the Yellow Runner, the name of the brand and coaching platform she founded.
McRae won the 2021 Badwater 135 in 30:48:47 and the 2023 Moab 240 in 86:18:33, the latter as part of a season in which she completed four races of 200 miles or longer. She has also won the Mozart 100 in Austria and the Tarawera 100 Mile in New Zealand, finished twice in the top 10 at the Western States 100, and completed UTMB three times.
Away from racing, McRae works as an author, coach, and speaker. She wrote Choose Strong: The Choice That Changes Everything and co-hosts the Choose Strong podcast. Her path into the sport ran through a difficult childhood in Orange County, where she lost her mother to cancer as a teenager, a story she has told widely in her writing and speaking.
