Fanny Kiprotich of Kenya won the 2026 Vienna City Marathon in 2:06:53 on April 19. Tigist Gezahagn of Ethiopia won the women's race in 2:20:06, setting the women's course record at the 43rd edition.

Kiprotich moved clear of a four-man lead group in the closing 10 kilometers. His 2:06:53 fell short of the existing course mark of 2:05:08 set by Samwel Mailu in 2023 but confirmed his readiness for deeper international fields. Race conditions stayed cool through the morning, supporting fast times in both elite races.

Gezahagn ran alone over the second half to lower the Vienna women's record. Her 2:20:06 broke the previous course mark and ranks among the fastest women's times in Austria's marathon history. The Ethiopian becomes the latest in a 2026 European spring stretch where multiple women's course records have fallen.

For more on the pre-race elite field and the Eritrean angle that shaped the preview, see our Vienna City Marathon 2026 preview. The broader arc of how Vienna built its place on the European marathon calendar is covered in our Vienna City Marathon history.

The course runs along the Danube and finishes near the Rathausplatz in central Vienna. The flat profile and predictable April weather have made the race a regular target for sub-2:10 attempts.

The race remains one of the deeper non-WMM marathons in Europe by elite field quality. Multiple sub-2:10 performances followed Kiprotich across the line in 2026.

Gezahagn's course record adds to a 2026 spring pattern across Europe. Paris, Rotterdam, Hamburg, and Vienna all saw women's marks fall this year, with Ethiopian-born athletes setting most of the new times.

Kiprotich's victory continues a strong Kenyan presence in Vienna. The country has produced multiple champions across the race's history, and his time places him among the fastest performers in the field for 2026 selection conversations.

The race is organized by Vienna City Marathon Veranstaltungs GmbH. The 2027 edition is expected to return in mid-April. Confirmed dates and elite invitations will be released later in 2026.
