PARIS MARATHON 2026 PREVIEW: 60,000 RUNNERS, 20 SUB-2:10 MEN, AND CRIPPA'S FRENCH AMBITION

The Schneider Electric Marathon de Paris sends approximately 60,000 runners down the Champs-Elysees on Sunday, April 12. It is the largest single-day marathon in continental Europe and the anchor of the French spring running calendar. The 2026 elite field includes 20 men with career bests under 2:10 and three women under 2:20, making it the deepest collection of talent the race has assembled.
The Men's Field
The headliner is Ethiopia's Samwel Mailu, whose 2:05:08 from the 2023 Vienna Marathon makes him the fastest entrant on paper. He is joined by Bayelign Teshager (2:07:51, Fukuoka 2025), Rwanda's John Hakizimana (2:06:04, Dubai 2026), and Uganda's Mande Bushendich (2:06:08, Malaga 2025). That quartet alone would make this a competitive international marathon.
But the storyline that will draw French media is Yemaneberhan Crippa. The Italian, who holds a 2:06:06 personal best from 2024 and is the reigning European half-marathon champion, is targeting an improvement on the Paris course. Crippa's range, from 5,000 meters on the track to the marathon, makes him the most versatile distance runner in Europe.
Adding intrigue, Djibouti's Mohamed Ismael will make his marathon debut after running 59:45 in the Lisbon half marathon on March 8. A sub-60 half at altitude and on a hilly course suggests he has the raw speed for something significant at 42.195 km.
The men's course record of 2:04:21, set by Elisha Rotich in 2021, is within reach if conditions cooperate. Paris is not as flat as Berlin or Rotterdam, with gentle undulations through the Bois de Boulogne and Bois de Vincennes, but it is fast enough. Last year, Benard Biwott won in 2:05:25, proving the course can produce times close to the world's best.
The Women's Field
Finland's Alisa Vainio arrives as the highest-profile European entrant. She won the 2026 Seville Marathon in 2:20:39 and finished fifth at the 2025 Tokyo World Championships. Running her fifth marathon in seven months, fatigue is the variable. Her talent is not in question.
Three members of the French 2024 Olympic marathon team will race on home roads: Mekdes Woldu (2:23:13, Barcelona 2025), Meline Rollin (2:24:12, Seville 2024), and Melody Julien (2:25:00, Valencia 2023). The Paris crowd will have favorites to follow, and the Olympic connection adds a layer of national significance to the women's race.
The women's course record of 2:19:48, set by Judith Jeptum in 2022, would require a significant jump from the current field. But Vainio's trajectory suggests she is capable of threatening it.
What to Watch
The start on the Avenue des Champs-Elysees at approximately 8:00 AM sends the elite wave east through Place de la Bastille, along the Seine, through the Bois de Vincennes, and back west through the Bois de Boulogne before finishing on Avenue Foch near the Arc de Triomphe. The course is a loop through central Paris, and the scale of 60,000 runners moving through the city creates an atmosphere that rivals any marathon in the world.
For the competitive race, the key stretch comes between kilometers 30 and 38, where the gentle climbs through the Bois de Boulogne thin the field. The last four kilometers are flat and fast, and the 2025 and 2024 editions were both decided in the final three kilometers.
